Why do you want to have ducks? Are they going to be lawn or pond ornaments, pets, or for egg production or a combination of all? Male ducks (drakes) make the best "ornaments" with their green heads and prettier feathers and are tamest and friendliest pets. Females have bland colouring and can at times be very noisy especially in the afternoon when old granny is trying to have a nap. Male ducks are almost mute, maybe sometimes uttering a low hissing sound. And male ducks tend to get along with each other. Maybe you think you need only females because the local bylaw states "no males"? That is nonsense with ducks. The female is the noisy one. Besides, it is unlikely the local bylaw people actually can tell which are male and which are female. Most have grown up in the city and likely can't even tell the difference between a cow and a bull. Holiday Hill Poultry now has a good selection of older ducklings that no longer require heat. Some are getting to an age where sex differences are obvious but most are still too young. Prices range (depending on age and quantity) from $5.00 to $25 each. Varieties include Khaki Campbells, Cayuaga, and Welsh Harlequins. Give us a call, e-mail, or drop by the farm to see what's available.
